Another day ahead for Capitol Jets at South Albany Airport. The first day of Capitol Jets Airshow has come and gone, with a record 47 pilots at last count by this webmaster, it is a great success. There were pilots from as far away as Canada and Maine. I did see a license plate from Florida also. The crowds loved watching these jets perform in the air. Our local Channel 9 news team arrived and the camera man started with his camera on a tripod. Soon he realized that he could not keep up with these jets and their speed so he took the camera and put it on his shoulder to capture some of these flights. A lot of the jets flew in excess of 150 miles per hour with some topping 200 mph. At noon time, the jets were lined up and spectators were allowed behind the lines to view and talk with the pilots up close. Some great picture moments for those who love aircraft. Of great interest for a good part of the day was an A10 that sat quietly on the side. With a wing span of about 10 feet and twin turbines it was something to see on the ground. Spectators kept asking if this was going to become airborn and their request was filled. In the middle of the afternoon, the pilot lit up both engines and this A10 became airborne. For the most of the day there were at least 3 planes in the air at any one time, there were periods of 5 pilots flying. The sky was filled with Turbine Powered Jet aircraft with some of them pouring on the smoke which was very impressive. Remember this on Sunday July 15th, 2007 which will be the last day of this event until next year. The South Albany Airport is located about 15 minutes south of Exit 23 from the Thruway. Just take Route 9 South from Exit 23 and follow the signs. You will make a right hand turn and about 2 miles from Route 9 is South Albany Airport. The Thundervolts and Flying Knights who are sponsoring this event hope to see you there.
